Sgt
Richard W. Moore
Ridgway
Company H, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division
Died of Wounds: 25 October 1918
Cited for Bravery at Fismette, France
The President of the United States of
America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes
pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously)
to Sergeant Richard W. Moore (ASN: 1248409), United States Army,
for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company
H, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, A.E.F., at Fismette,
France, 27 August 1918.
As one of a group which was attacked by an overwhelming force
of enemy, Sergeant Moore assisted in the defense of a crossing
over the Vesle river and made possible the retirement of about
20 of his comrades. He continued against great odds to hold
his position and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy,
finally retiring under orders, fighting his way through heavy
machine-gun, rifle, and artillery fire.
His exceptional disregard for personal safety, resourcefulness,
and bravery were an inspiration to all his comrades. Sergeant
Moore was severely gassed in this fight and died shortly thereafter.
