Fireman 2nd Class Gail W. Chapin USS Monaghan (DD-354) Hometown: Port Allegany Missing in action: 18 December 1944 Age: 25 The USS Monaghan sunk during Typhoon Cobra east of Luzon, Philippines. Only 6 survivors were rescued from the crew of 100 officers and men. Over 790 officers and men were lost at sea from three destroyers sinking during the storm.
