Outpost HARRY, North Korea
Age: 25
Buried: Eulalia Cemetery, Coudersport
Between June 10 and 18, 1953 only weeks before the end of
the war, the Chinese made a determined attempt to take Outpost
Harry in the central section of the front at Chorwon-Kumwha.
The defense of the outpost was assigned to the 3rd Infantry
Division and its attached units, the 5th Regimental Combat Team
and the Greek Expeditionary Force. Each night a single company
defended the outpost but suffered such high casualties (59%
avg) that on the following night it would have to be replaced
by another company. On three successive occasions the enemy
attacked in reinforced regimental strength, prefacing their
attack with heavy concentrations of mortar and artillery. The
seemingly endless number of Chinese were able to break through
the defensive positions and intense hand to hand fighting took
place in the trenches on Outpost Harry. The coordinated efforts
of the American forces overwhelmed the numerically superior
enemy forces and forced them to retreat from positions on June
13, 1953 leaving behind over 2,400 Chinese dead.
